Blood-sucking sand flies love to eat marijuana, study finds

As pesky and annoying as sand flies are, they might actually prefer eating weed over sucking blood, according to new scientific research.

According to a study published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, sand flies consumed cannabis more frequently than researchers expected.

The study’s lead author, Ibrahim Abbasia from the Institute for Medical Research Israel-Canada and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and his researchers used next-generation gene-sequencing techniques to determine what types of plants the flies were eating.

The team studied trapped sand flies throughout five different regions — across Brazil, Ethiopia, Kazakhstan, Israel, and Palestine.

Experts observed that “the most commonly consumed plant in four of the five sites was cannabis sativa, despite its apparent lack of abundance in the study sites,” suggesting that the flies actually go out of their way to satisfy
