Castroville cannabis research supplier gets county planning commission OK

Salinas A Castroville cannabis operation seeking to become the state’s first supplier for federally approved and funded marijuana research got Monterey County’s blessing on Wednesday.

By a unanimous vote, the county Planning Commission approved a use permit for the Biopharmaceutical Research Company’s proposed medical cannabis facility in an existing 8,000-square-foot Commercial Parkway industrial building.

The permit allows the cultivation and manufacturing of pharmaceutical-grade cannabis including marijuana flowers with varying chemical properties, oils extracted using carbon dioxide and, eventually, research-grade edibles for delivery to scientific researchers, including outside the state.
