Scientists say the chemicals in weed destroy the poisonous protein amyloid beta – which has been linked to memory loss.

They now hope to develop a drug using the active compound in marijuana that creates the “high”.

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) was found to reduce the inflammation caused by the destructive protein.

Professor David Schubert, of the Salk Institute, La Jolla, California, US, said: “Although other studies have offered evidence cannabinoids might be neuroprotective against the symptoms of Alzheimer’s, we believe our study is the first to demonstrate cannabinoids affect both inflammation and amyloid beta accumulation in nerve cells.”
